Back in the 1800’s, northwest Georgia was originally the home of Cherokee Native Americans until the Georgia Gold Rush in 1829. Gold rush fever suddenly made it worth the risk for miners to move into the area previously left to the Cherokee. Federal troops forcibly disbanded the remaining Cherokee tribes in 1838 and relocated them in forts such as Fort Buffington, 6 miles east of Canton before sending them on via the Trail of Tears. The fort has long since vanished, but the space is memorialized with a large slab of green Cherokee marble.

The tiny town of 200 was burned to the ground in 1864 after Canton was used as a base for guerrilla attacks against the railroad near Cassville. Cassville was also destroyed but only Canton managed to survive and slowly rebuild.
