Canton real estate offers a wide selection of home styles to suit many tastes. Located near the county seat of Cherokee County, among the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountain, the city of Canton, GA, is 40 miles north of Atlanta and encompasses nearly 14 square miles. Incorporated in 1933, the current population (2010) for Canton is nearly 23,000 residents.

Back in the 1800’s, northwest Georgia was originally the home of Cherokee Native Americans until the Georgia Gold Rush in 1829. Gold rush fever suddenly made it worth the risk for miners to move into the area previously left to the Cherokee. Federal troops forcibly disbanded the remaining Cherokee tribes in 1838 and relocated them in forts such as Fort Buffington, 6 miles east of Canton before sending them on via the Trail of Tears. The fort has long since vanished, but the space is memorialized with a large slab of green Cherokee marble.

After the gold rush interest disappeared, the push of the railroad made Canton a significant point during the Civil War. Its location was pivotal along the railroad line to attract the notice of the Union Army’s General Sherman and the Ohio 5th Calvary under Major Thomas T. Heath. The tiny town of 200 was burned to the ground in 1864 after Canton was used as a base for guerrilla attacks against the railroad near Cassville. Cassville was also destroyed but only Canton managed to survive and slowly rebuild.

Rapid growth in manufacturing encouraged the city to increase its capacity and it soon became known for its “Canton Denim”. The Canton Cotton Mills closed in 1979. Canton has continued to grow and prosper as the suburbs of Atlanta have shifted northward. Canton real estate development has expanded along with Canton’s population, almost tripling in size over the last decade.

Homes for sale in Canton are easily accessed via Interstate 75 and I 575, part of the original Dixie route, The Dixie Highway. This road, known as “The granddaddy of Interstate 75”, was the first interstate to reach into the south.

Proud of its rich history, the city of Canton offers plays and special entertainment at the Historic Canton Theatre on Main Street, and has revitalized the city with a new cultural spark. Streets across the city also enjoyed a fresh look with the “Streetscapes” program, with brick pavers, lamp posts, detailed landscaping and improved intersections.
